Week Eleven Review: What I learned from Twitter and Hashtags

Tweet: Insert Drawings into Google Apps
I am a huge fan of all things Google. Alice Keeler is a teacher and the author of "50 Things You Can Do With Google Classroom." The individual tweet I chose to review is about adding drawing to these Google apps. Her blog post (link above) mentions the Aww Whiteboard as the tool to do this. The rest of the post is a step-by-step explanation of how to accomplish this task in a classroom and how to incorporate the drawings of your students. I am definitely going to include this new tool in my classroom. It is natural to want to explain or describe a new concept as it comes up in discussion. I also love the idea of including students' opinions and ideas in real time.

Tweet: 5 Simple Ways to Give Students Feedback During Project Based Learning
This is such an important thing to be able to do as a teacher. Project Based Learning is something I want to use in my classroom, but I worry about how to assess and help my students as they are working... "we know what feedback is and ins't, but we must also be intentional regarding when and how it is given." -HackingPBL
These simple ways are:
2. Written, on the Rubric
Make sure the rubric is visable while they're working
3. Google Drive, comments in the margins
(here's a trick)
4. Conferences, scheduled ahead of time
5. Mini-lessons, in small or large groups

Tweet: Mindfulness in Middle School
Mindfulness is now being implemented in middle schools to counteract student stress and anxiety. The author, Daria Pizzuto, explains what mindfulness practice is and how it should be used in a classroom. There are definitely right and wrong ways to introduce an activity to your class. This practice became so popular that other teachers werer coming in to observe and Pizzuto had put together a training seminar to present around the district. She also learned that using these exercises at different times during the lesson or during the week makes a difference in the students' performance and anxiety levels.

I love the idea of teachers admittedly being weird in pursuit of really teaching their students. This tweet, from Darbie J. Valenti, features MATHew, an elf on the shelf who asks the students different questions every day. In social studies, I would love to use a similar concept, maybe have my character hanging from a map or pointing to a new place on the globe each day. Whatever I end up doing, this was a great new idea I hadn't heard before and I know this hashtag is full of these out-there ideas!

#googleedu
LIke I said earlier, I love using Google Apps because they are available to anyone with internet. That said, I have been using the bare bones because I am self taught and my needs for Google Apps have not been too complex just yet. This tweet, from Matt Miller, shares a link that will explain not only the basics more thoroughly, but will give me insight to 20 collaborative Google Apps! This is a great resource for me. I usually can figure things out intuitively, but not reading directions often means I never learn the quick tricks or details. Now I get to learn the details and apply them with my students!

#hyperdocs
Matt Miller once again shares valuable resources via Twitter. Under this hastag, #hyperdocs, I am learning about first, exactly what a hyperdoc is, then how to affectively use them in my classroom. The best part about finding a Padlet for these hyperdocs is that I now have access to so many vetted, successful, and creative lessons.
